Ernie Els, The Big Easy, accomplished something today that was far from easy. Entering the final 9 holes of the British Open, 6 shots behind Adam Scott, who played 54 holes of magnificent golf, appeared to be too late to mount a significant charge, but a closing 32 for Els, now winner of Majors in 3 different decades and a back nine score of 39 for Scott that included 4 consecutive bogeys on the last 4 holes, gave Els the victory.
In this victory speech, Els did not speak of himself, but instead of his good friend, Adam Scott, how great a player he is and how he feels for Adam in his loss. Els, is a very modest gentleman, who heads up a wonderful charity for autistic children, called Els for Autism. It has raised money for autistic children worldwide and under construction is the Els Center of Excellence, in Palm Beach Florida will be over 100,000 sq ft when completed and Ernie and his wife Liezel have raised almost $30 million for the charity.
Driving by Els modest driveway in the gated community of The Bears Club in Jupiter, you cannot see any of his 17,000 total sq ft West Indies Grand Complex surrounded by over 300 mature palms.
