Wackenhut

December 21st, 2010

G4S Wackenhut, formerly known as Wackenhut, is in the final stages of moving into Abacoa in Jupiter. In Abacoa they will join the Scripps Institute, the Max Planck Society, and Florida Atlantic University Honors Campus in the core of the town. Abacoa is turning into an intellectual center and this offsets the dependence Floridians have always had on economic support from the housing industry and tourism.

Here’s what their new building looks like.

G4S Wackenhut was started in Coral Gables in 1954 by ex-FBI man George Wackenhut and three partners. Originally they provided manned security, but the company slowly evolved into a high-tech organization that found its way to profitable government, NASA, and nuclear contracts. As an example, in 1989 they won a $2.3 million contract to guard Metrorail stations in Miami and grew the practice into a nearly $20 million-per-year, no-bid contract. But this is small potatoes compared to the Federal contracts they have been awarded, especially since 9/11.

In the 1990’s, when George had his waterfront mansion on the market for $27 million, Palm Beach County paid his firm $1 million to relocate to Palm Beach Gardens and create jobs. In the end, most of the jobs were Miami transplants, not new jobs.  Nevertheless, they are a clean business and provide jobs beyond the usual sources.

In 2002 the company was acquired for $570 million by a Danish corporation.  In 2010 G4S Wackenhut is changing its name to G4S Secure Solutions to reflect a new business model.

Cold Weather Is Good For Citrus!

December 8th, 2010

We have had some really cold weather here in the Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter area for the last couple of days. Now, in all fairness, we are not dealing with lake effect snowfall that they get in Buffalo, or the mountains of snow that they have in Tahoe, but nevertheless, when you live in sunny, South Florida, temperatures plunging into the 30’s are a big deal. Although the skies are clear, playing golf and hitting the beach will have to wait. This cold weather never lasts more than a day or two.

We had a hard frost in Jupiter Farms for the last two nights and of course the farmers in the western part of Palm Beach County are really worried about their crops. Even the national news is reporting on the strawberry farmers covering their crops with a sheet of ice to keep the temperature from dipping below 32 degrees on the fruit.

Along the coast, though, we have some good effects from the cold weather. First, it makes the sailfish bite. And since we are a fishing capital, this is a good thing. In fact, Stuart, a town just to our north, calls itself the ‘Sailfish Capital of the World’. Pictures are being posted on Facebook this morning of fish being caught.

The other good thing is that the cold weather turns the citrus sweet. Until we get some really cold weather, they aren’t good to eat. Cold Weather Is Good For Citrus! So now we will have fresh citrus earlier than last year. And we have plenty of citrus. Take a look at this shot below.

This picture was taken at one of my listings in PGA National.  This tree is right in their backyard and is loaded with naval oranges.

So, tonight the temperature will only be in the 40’s before warming up some more tomorrow.  And once again golfers will be calling for tee times and the parking lots near the beach will be filling up.
