Brush Fire Darkens Beach Skies!

December 30th, 2010

The other day we had a large brush fire north of Jupiter that sent billowing clouds of smoke skyward and darkened the skies along our famous beaches. Fire conditions have been especially dangerous lately because it is so dry and the slightest spark can set off a fire. Couple that with the extreme winds we have had the last couple of days and the picture below is the result.

This shot was taken on the US-1 bridge looking north to Hobe Sound where the fire was threatening homes in the Hobe Sound Golf Club. The condo in the picture is Jupiter Cove, right on the Inlet.

Fires in the winter can be especially nasty since it is very dry this time of year and it can be very windy as cold fronts make their way through the state. The smoke from this fire was blowing to the southeast and out over the ocean. Here’s is what it looked like over the Village of Tequesta.

Several years ago the authorities set a ‘controlled burn’ loose in Jonathan Dickinson State Park on a day when the wind was blowing about 40 knots. Naturally, the fire got completely out of control and swept through the park, burning all of the once-famous leaning pines to the ground. What was once a forest of really cool pines leaning over from the pressure of constant sea breezes now looks like a moonscape. I guess once a controlled burn is on the calendar, no amount of common sense can get it stopped or postponed. Oh, when the fire reached the north edge of Burt Reynolds’ home, the fire department pulled out all the stops to keep his house from getting torched. Too bad the beautiful pines weren’t so lucky.

Jupiter Farms | Great Mexican Food!

Jupiter Farms | Great Mexican Food!

Jupiter Farms, one of this area’s most overlooked great residental areas, has a great Mexican restaurant and caterer.  Located in Sierra Square, Guacamole has fabulous authentic Mexican food.  This site was formerly a Spanish chicken take-out place, but it never caught on.

I ate here when Guacomole first opened and had a chat with the owner and his wife.  He has been in the business for years, but this is the first time on his own.  The food was fabulous!

Today, I stopped in for lunch again and the place was constantly busy. My favorite is the brisket burrito and it’s big enough for two. Like they say, truck drivers always know the great places to eat, so it’s good to see people who really know authentic Mexican food eating in here. And they do…all the time.

I’m happy to see a small family business making it in tough times. If you are looking for a great place to eat when you are in Jupiter Farms, maybe after going canoeing in Riverbend Park, be sure and check this place out. The kids will like it, too.  This is just one more reason why Jupiter Farms is a great place to live!

The Lazy Loggerhead | Waterfront Dining in Jupiter

November 10th, 2010

A famous chef, Fritz Schmidt, has commented, “Sometimes the best restaurants will turn up where you least expect to find them”.  And so it is with The Lazy Loggerhead.

The Lazy Loggerhead is located within Carlin Park, a Palm Beach County oceanfront park located on the south side of the Jupiter Beach Resort where Indiantown Road meets A1A (Beach Road).

Not very big, but with a feel of the Caribbean Islands, you walk in from the beach or park and walk up a rise to get to it, waterfront dining in Jupiter.  You can dine inside or sit outside and watch the beach crowd at this big park.  I like to sit inside and watch people through the large windows.

The food is tropical with fish and fruits, imaginative, and not too costly.  Your best bet is for each person to order something different then share…just like Chinese food.  Then nobody misses out.

Like many of these small, local favorites, the Lazy Loggerhead gets very busy during the season and they require that your entire party be there before being seated. This stops the early birds from grabbing all the tables while others stand and wait for a table.

I have eaten here with business clients, my wife and family, and friends.  Everyone will feel comfortable with the style of the place, whether you have on a white shirt and tie or flip-flops on sandy feet. The only thing you can’t do is arrive by boat, but you can do that at other restaurants like the Waterway Café or the River House in Palm Beach Gardens.

The location is close to communities like Jonathan’s Landing, Ocean Trail, and Jupiter Cove, all of which have waterfront properties for sale.  So give the Lazy Loggerhead a try and you will certainly be coming back for seconds.

Jupiter and Tequesta homeowners enjoy affordable family dining at Park Avenue BBQ Grill

November 6th, 2010

When I’m in the mood for BBQ ribs and/or chicken, Park Avenue Grill with its 11 locations throughout Palm Beach County is one of my favorites. Our home is in Admirals Cove and their Tequesta location at 236 US Highway 1 just north of the Jupiter Lighthouse past Jupiter Island is a 10-minute drive. I like my ribs (which are never frozen) and chicken charred, but not burnt. Charred brings out the best flavor. Service is outstanding. If they don’t get it perfect and I want it a bit more crispy, they put it on the grill until it’s right – no questions asked. They have 3 BBQ sauces, Mild, Hot and Stupid. You need a firehouse for the stupid sauce. My wife likes the salad, corn, and other veggies. They have a Sunday special of all you can eat chicken for $9.99 + 2 sides + cornbread/garlic bread. The prices are downright friendly and I can take my kids and grandkids for a real affordable meal, including tip. Plus everyone is happy! Park Avenue BBQ Grill can be reached at (561) 747-7427. Pickup and delivery are available. Happy eating!
