About Jupiter Island

Florida's Jupiter Island is the third and southern of a triad of Barrier Islands located off the border of Martin County's Treasure Coast, directly north of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County. The 17 mile long, famed exclusive island's reputation for wealth was established in 1715 with an unexpected encounter with wealth when the Spanish Plata Fleet suffered shipwreck and complete loss of its cargo of silver and gold coins destined for the Spanish treasury. Modern day treasure seekers may still find pieces of the Spanish treasure washed up and buried just below the surface of beach sand there.
Of far greater value are the present day homes in Jupiter Island; made so by the wealthy and famous from Greg Norman to Tiger Woods, who established the top price range of $40M that he paid for his estate in 2006.
Jupiter Island's first recorded history was as part of the Gomez Grant. This was a land grant from the King of Spain to Eusebio Gomez in 1815, as a reward for faithful service and includes not only Jupiter Island but almost all of what is now mainland Hobe Sound.
The land was divided and redivided among the Gomez heirs and others and much of it was sold in the early 1900s to a British land development company that went bankrupt in the late 1920s. The extensive land holdings of the corporation were acquired by a group of friends who enjoyed staying at a small Island hotel with the idea of conserving the natural beauty of the Island and this has been the aim of the original owners, their heirs, and others who have purchased land and built homes here. In fact, much of the Island has been given to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy for wildlife refuges and preservation of the natural ecology.
Jupiter Island was incorporated as a town in 1953 and enacted strict low density zoning which has preserved its natural beauty probably better than any other populated barrier island in existence. One and two-acre zoning is the norm for single family residential homes and no high rises or multiple family dwellings are allowed. The town has its own government, including mayor, commissioners, a fire department, and a police force with probably the highest ratio of police to residents in the United States. There are currently 468 homes on Jupiter Island.

The Disney-like lazy river water park is connected by 4 bridges in an H-shaped configuration. In the middle is a multi-story gazebo with a circular waterslide. Add a wading pool, lap pool by the Atlantic Ocean, and another pool by the house, and you can eliminate the trip to Sea World altogether. Sea World might have Orca in captivity, but Celine has the whole Atlantic Ocean in her backyard in case kids, René Charles and twins Eddy and Nelson, get tired of the pools! The backyard also has a tennis court, basketball court, play slide house, croquet, and 250+ palm trees. (click photos for larger size)

Being a kid in Florida means you learn how to swim before you walk. Most homeowners have a 30x15 pool or a stand-up pool since you can swim year round. However, being a child of Celine Dion and René Angélil gets you the full combination of Willy Wonka meets Steven Spielberg of futuristic swimming pools and backyard fun. Oh, the $20+ million 2010-built house, by the way, is only a magnificent Bermuda-style white mansion with almost 10,000 square feet of living area on approximately 6 acres in Jupiter Island, Florida, the second most expensive neighborhood in the United States. The main house has 8 bedrooms and a workout facility by the beach. There are 6 structures altogether, including 3 separate guest homes and a plethora of octagonal-shaped gazebos and a picturesque white picket fence with bougainvillea and evergreens in between. In the last decade Celine and Rene have had homes in Palm Beach Gardensand Jupiter. First Celine and René had real estate at PGA National in The Island at PGA and then built a home in Jupiter at Admirals Cove. Years ago, my Mom, Bette Lichtenstein, a resident of Admirals Cove and a superb 10 handicap golfer invited Celine, a beginner to play golf with her group. Celine said that she wasn't very good. My Mom told Celine not to worry as she didn't have a good voice and they would all be equals!
After selling at Admirals Cove and coming back from thier Las Vegas home, they then were going to build at the Jack Nicklaus Bears Club , now home to Michael Jordan before finally settling on Jupiter Island. According to a nearby neighbor, Celine wanted to build a music studio but was turned down by the town because residents are not allowed to build work facilities on Jupiter Island, although one wonders how neighbor Tiger Woods got away with building his practice golf course, since we know he doesn’t use that for play. Also, fines from the city for excessive uses of water although 6 wells keep 6.5 million gallons of water running through the 3 water pools. On top of that, complaints from the neighbors flowed in about loud noise. If they don’t like the rules, Celine and Rene are not afraid to move. Builders and real estate agents have to be salivating at the thought!
